MTV airs a half hour show called "The Goods", hosted by Pauley. Each week she interviews top designers, who design a couple of outfits for the show which you can call up and buy. The show is aimed at the twenty-something crowd.
This particular show they featured Anna Sui, Todd Oldham, and Marc Jacobs. The interviews are laid back - Pauley finds her interviewees just coming back from an errand, or popping out for a quiet moment. (Sure.)
Anna Sui wanted to be a designer since she was four years old, making clothes for her dolls. When she started, she wanted to make clothes for the rock and roll stores. It wasn't till about four years ago she started working with supermodels. Now her designs are worn by rock bands.
The bands she listens to are the Smashing Pumpkins and the Black Crowes.
For the show, she designed a T-shirt and skirt.
The long sleeve T-shirt comes in pink and orange, nylon and spandex,
with Anna Sui's cheerleader motif.
To go with the shirt, she designed a black wrap skirt in vinyl with patch
pockets. It wraps round the back, and ties in front.
Todd Oldham
Pauley and the band (Renos Men) dash around the streets to find Todd Oldham's studio. You see some runway footage before each interview to let you see what kind of designs to expect.
They find Todd in an elevator, and chat with him there. Pauley started by asking Todd where he gets his inspiration. "From all over really. The sky, the streets, but, mostly from my dogs." These interviews are a bit tongue in cheek. When asked if he thought the grunge look is dead, he eyeballed the band and said, "Not in this elevator it isn't". He didn't really give a straight answer to what bands he liked. He said his dogs liked Joni Mitchell and Prince, so he'd have to go somewhere in between those two.
His designs for the show were a white vest, made in denim with frayed edging, a tied back, and snap closures in front. To go with the vest, was an A-line madras check skirt with real patchwork. These outfits are not available in stores, they are exclusive to "The Goods".
Lines are open round the clock for ordering from an 800 number.
Todd had another outfit to offer. A black vest this time, cut more like a
men's, in the same frayed denim. And boxer shorts in the madras cotton.
Marc Jacobs
Off they go again, to find Marc. They find him leaning against a wall, smoking a cigarette. (Sure.)
Pauley asks if he was inspired by anyone in particular. He answers that he wasn't, just the girls all dressed up on the streets of New York. When asked if there was anything in fashion that he doesn't like, he said there were a lot of things he didn't like, but if he named them, he'd be eating his words next year.
He listens to old and new music - a variety. The music he uses for his shows is usually the stuff he's listening to at that time. He chooses music for his models, so they have a good time on the runway.
His design was a black jersey knit dress, with "I LOVE Rock 'n Roll", in rhinestones, also available with the logo "I LOVE Rap". (Substitute hearts for "LOVE", (and something decent for Rap.))
The prices for all the garments are reasonable. The 800 number is on the
screen with size and colour information. All the designs are
reviewed at the end of the show. Surprise surprise, they accept check, money
order or credit cards.
