Born in Haynesville, Louisiana, USA. Beene left Tulane Medical School in New Orleans before taking a degree and started work in the display department of the Los Angeles branch of the clothing store I. Magnin. In 1947 he moved to New York and studied at the Traphagen School of Fashion. He spent 1948 to 1951 in Paris, attending the Académie Julian and tailoring studio of Molyneaux.
While his dresses are sometimes seen as the American version of couture, Beene is ultimately a designer with a sportswear sensibility. Comfort is paramount and has been since his label was launched in 1963.
