John Bates

(Born 1938) Trained as a journalist. Aged 19 was apprenticed at couture house of Herbert Sidon. John Siggins and a partner backed the launch of Jean Varon in 1959 and appointed Bates as designer. Launched own label in 1974. An innovator who exploited modern fabrics and daring cut. Dressed many actresses, especially known for his designs for cult television series The Avengers and for pop stars.
