Manolo Blahnik was born on 27 November 1942 in the small village of Santa Cruz de la Palma in the Canary Islands where he grew up on a banana plantation with his Spanish mother
and Czech father. Studied literature in Geneva
and the Ecole du Louvre, Paris. His path to London in 1971 was a circuitous one. His first job was a photo reporter before the then editor-in-cheif of US Vogue convinced him to design his first shoe collection and
opened Chelsea shop in
1973 and another in New York in 1979.
