
Norman Hartnell
(1901-79)
Trained at Lucile. Opened his couture house at
10 Bruton Street Mayfair 1923 and moved to
No. 26 in 1934. From 1938 became royal
dressmaker. Launched ready-to-wear in 1942.
Knighted in 1977. Especially famous moments
in his career include the all-white wardrobe for
Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1938, and
the current Queen's Coronation gown in 1953.
Winter-halter style, beaded crinoline evening
gowns were a speciality. Author of Silver and
Gold (London: Evans Brothers 1955).
