Stephen Jones

(Born 1957)
Born in West Kirby, Liverpool, England. Studied fashion at St Martin's School of Art in London and trained in millinery part-time with Shirley Hex Of Lachasse. Became freelance milliner on leaving college in 1979, designing a hat collection for Fiorucci and joined Lachasse briefly before opening his own business in 1980 in the basement of PX in Covent Garden. His exquisitely made innovative sometimes witty millinery quickly became popular with designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Claude Montana, Thierry Mugler and Zandra Rhodes. Has worked with many top pop groups and for singers such as Madonna, Boy George and George Michael. In 1984 Jones became the first British milliner to work in Paris. Since that time he has designed for the collections of Antonio Berardi, John Galliano, Katherine Hamnett, Emanuel Ungaro and Vivienne Westwood, among others. He is credited with helping to revive millinery arts during the latter part of the 20th century. Also produces a lower price collection: Miss Jones.
