Yves Saint Laurent
Born:-08/01/1936
Designer of classic French fashions
Many agree that the early Seventies were the ugliest period in
fashion. But then came Yves Saint Laurent's fantasy ready-to-wear
collection for the fall of 1976 - which changed everything. His peasant and
gypsy looks, inspired by the Ballet Ruse, were on a grand scale. They had
vibrant colour, movement, dash, energy - in short, everything that was
lacking before. There were big cossack overshirts, fur-trimmed hats,
scarves tied under the chin, embroidered vests layered over big shirts or
dresses over long skirts, all i brilliant colours. For those who saw it,
it was a revelation. For them and everyone else it was goodbye to Banlon
and hello to a brave new world.
